Keeping a Travel Sketchbook

Whether you are a novice or an experienced artist, a trip can be an excellent opportunity to finally getting around and doing a lot of drawing. That being said, a sketchbook is very portable and makes quite a great souvenir when you get back home.

Begin by packing along a medium-sized sketchbook. Make sure to purchase a nice one so that you will be excited to work on it. Then, add a few of your favourite types of pens or pencils, a small ruler or straight edge, and some markers.

Decide whether you intend to draw on the page every day at every site or in every destination you go to. Alternatively, you may just opt for sketching as a means of killing time aboard transportation while travelling. Such a plan can help, especially if you intend to fill an entire book while on holiday.

Avoid being picky about ideas for the subjects of the picture or portrait you want to create. Instead, try to draw a lot. If you find inspiration, use it to make a nice addition to your collection. Also, experiment with a variety of styles. Keep in mind that travel provides a great opportunity for realistic depictions of the scenes you encounter.

Consider adding other elements like a short text on the side. Jotting down a few words can really flesh out the impressions created by your output. Plus, it can be particularly helpful if you think you might forget what the drawings are. However, bear in mind that too much text can make your work look too busy, so make sure you keep them to a minimum.
